A funny thing happens when you’re writing a series.
As much as you may love it, at some point, it starts to feel like work and your mind desperately wants to focus on something—anything—else.
Which is why I thought up a story that was escapism for me. At first, this little story was just something fun for me to think about. Then, I decided to try it out. What would it hurt to jot down a few thoughts and see if they turned into anything?
85 pages later, it’s turned into something. And it’s something I really, really like.
After graduating from journalism school in the midst of the American recession, Maggie Rhodes became frustrated with freelancing in New York. Having followed the British royal family since she was a child, thanks to the influence of her British grandmother, on the day Prince Benjamin Davenport’s engagement to Emilia Markham is announced, Maggie launches a website devoted to the royal family.
In the years since, her website has flourished. But even though she’s America’s foremost British royals blogger, that doesn’t mean she’s automatically on the media list for the event the now-married Davenports are attending in New York City. So she devises a plan to see them anyway. But what she doesn’t expect is for them to not only see her coming, but to have a proposal of their own for her.
At just 85 pages, it isn’t finished. It’s nowhere close, actually. But even so, I’ve wanted to share this with my friends and family. So I thought, why not share it with everyone?
Because I want this to be fun and to remain a bit of escapism, I’m doing something a bit different. For me, at least.
I’m going to publish this book chapter by chapter as an unedited, imperfect serial. There will be Doctor Who and Hamilton and Narnia references, as well as typos and truly terrible writing and character development issues and very possibly plot holes that you guys will point out, but I kind of think that’s what’s going to make this (hopefully) low-key and stress-free. I’m going to do my best to update it weekly until I’ve written “The End” – fingers crossed I don’t have to renege on that.
So, without further ado, I’ll present the first four chapters of Courting Royal, my probably reckless, most definitely imperfect foray into adult contemporary romance. I hope you enjoy!
